From Sister Islands Rock Iguanas to flying Red-footed Booby birds and West Indian Whistling Ducks to even the smallest green and brown anoles – all of our wildlife rely on YOU to keep them safe.
Meet Rocky, our endemic and endangered Sister Islands Rock Iguana! Rocky is protected under law, and it is our duty to keep him safe.
When driving here in Little Cayman, it is necessary to take extra precautions above the rules of the road
- Drive the 25mph speed limit – The speed limit for Little Cayman never exceeds 25mph (40kph).
- Give Way! – Animals have the right of way, especially our critically endangered and protected species.
- Scan Actively! – Watch the road edges. Animals can unexpectedly run out in front of you.
- Watch Other Cars for sudden braking – driving with this in mind will keep other vehicles safe, as well as the animals.
Expect More animals traveling in groups – There is a higher likelihood of seeing more animals along the roads when passing ideal habitats, as well as during mating seasons. Even the crabs are vital for a healthy ecosystem!- Honking & Flashing might scare animals off the road. Be sure to give the animal enough space to ensure it has safely crossed before proceeding.
- Avoid Swerving – brake firmly but stay in your lane. Other cars may be passing, so avoid swerving if an animal darts in front of you.
For stubborn iguanas that will not move with the guidelines above, it is recommended that you:
Check your surroundings for other vehicles, then proceed with caution around the animal, keeping it in sight as you pass.
Alternatively, you may try to encourage it off of the road by stepping out of the vehicle and walking towards it in an authoritative manner.
We cannot prevent every instance of roadkill, but the majority of roadkill can be avoided by following these guidelines above. If you do run over an iguana, or if you witness a dead iguana on the road, please report it by calling 1.345.923.8072 (National Trust) or 1.345.916.5849 (DoE).
Thank you for taking the time to review the Safety Practices above! The wildlife thanks you and our community thanks you!
