Emancipation Day at Fort George

Fort George is the historic site where the Emancipation Proclamation was first read in 1834.
To mark this important August occasion, the National Trust’s Historic Programme, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture & Heritage, has once again incorporated Fort George into the Emancipation Day celebrations. Now in its second year, this collaboration is quickly becoming a meaningful annual tradition.
Visitors can experience a powerful dramatic reenactment of the reading of the Proclamation, performed by actors from Prospect Playhouse.
Performances will take place hourly at 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM, and 6:00 PM on Monday, May 4, at the Fort George Historic Site, located across the street from Elmslie Memorial Church.
