Experience the Magic of the Booby Pond Nature Reserve in Little Cayman

World Wetlands Day is celebrated on 2 February, drawing attention to our islands’ rich biodiversity and the heritage value of our wilderness areas for future generations. In particular, the Booby Pond Nature Reserve in Little Cayman highlights the value of protecting critical wetlands for both wildlife and local communities.
The National Trust is proud to be the custodian of the Little Cayman Booby Nature Reserve in Little Cayman, a landlocked saltwater lagoon with surrounding mangroves and old-growth dry forest. The reserve covers 340 acres, which we hold in perpetuity for conservation purposes. This protected area is a designated Ramsar site, giving this special habitat both local and international importance. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands calls for the conservation and wise use of wetlands to promote sustainable development and international cooperation, especially for waterfowl habitats.
Booby Pond is named for the resident Red-Footed Boobies (Sula sula), which are quite numerous. The reserve is the only breeding site for the Red-footed Booby in the Cayman Islands and the colony is one of the largest of this species in the region. Unfortunately, colonies of this species are in decline in the Caribbean and it is believed that the colony on Little Cayman now represents a large portion of the entire Caribbean and Atlantic population.
This vital wetland also provides a seasonally important habitat for resident and migratory waders and other waterfowl. The Booby Pond is the exclusive breeding site of a small but growing colony of Magnificent Frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens), which are found in trees along the pond’s northern margin. It is also an important feeding area for migratory and resident herons and egrets, and for passing and wintering shorebirds. Additionally, the dry land fringe supports a population of the endangered and endemic Sister Islands Rock Iguana (Cyclura nubila caymanensis).
It is truly a magical experience to visit the Booby Pond Nature Reserve in Little Cayman. It’s a favourite spot for bird lovers and a beautiful place to capture local wildlife on camera. Surrounded by nature and watching wildlife in a place it calls home creates memories that last forever.
